Zarivarlake
Zarivar
lake is situated in the Kurdistan Province and has a length of 5 km and a
maximum width of 1.6 km and lies west of Marivan. The lake's water is
sparkingly fresh and has a maximum depth of 6 m. It is a major touristic
attraction in the region. Lake Zeribar (Zarivar) is located to the west of
Marivan, Kurdistan Province of Iran. The lake lies at the elevation of around
1250 m with 5 km long and 1.5 km wide and 16 m deep. Lake Zeribar is well known
as one of the main locations in the Fertile Crescent where for the first time
(around 10,000 years ago) humans domesticated wild einkorn wheat. Lake Zeribar
has deep influence on the literature and folklore of Kurdish people. The
literal meaning of "Zeribar" or "Zarivar" in Farsi is
"like gold" (Zar = Gold, var = like). A depauperate oak forest exists
around the lake and a dam was erected on the outlet of the lake.
